The problem with the "private platforms can choose what they host" ( xkcd.com/1357/ ) argument is that the platforms in question have a monopoly, and as such should be neutral and regulated just like utilities.

Of course that's a terrible way to solve the problem, it would be much better to break them into a thousand pieces and require interoperability.
