I've had a longstanding interest in the biological evolution of intelligence. There are low hanging fruits to explore in that area. These issues are certainly wrapped tightly with the tags you listed above.
@Marc Yes, I find the biology angle fascinating too! Evolution is a learning algorithm, which has inspired several machine learning algorithms. Examples include genetic algorithms, genetic programming, simulated annealing, and learning classifier systems, to name a few.
The fact that evolution, as implemented by nature, is the only learning algorithm ever to have produced other learning algorithms, much less minds, is a very interesting realization to me. If I had the spare computing power available to me, I'd probably be running an experiment towards this goal right now.
