Hear me out because im not going where you think with this idea. A federated, social media for video sharing and commenting, but here is where it gets practical. Since video hosting is prohibitivley expensive, Instances would not store video or other medida, only comments, listings, descriptions, titles, just the text. Content is stored on (and or IPFS ), and clients for the service ship with and launch the neccisary software to function and sustain the net.

I probably can't personally make this happen on my own, so get it out there if you want to see it happen/get eyes and minds on it.

Or let me know if someones already doing it :blobcatgooglyshrug: i didn't check

Ipfs is not hosted in vacuum - it needs persistent services both huge storage and traffic capacities to run. peertube is close to what you want, as it (in theory) solves at least traffic problem with webtorrent. With that, personal instance, even popular, should be quite affordable.

@AMDmi3 I understand that lol, i cant explain the whole thought with so few characters, i hoped it would be clear enough to thoes who know what im talking about. The application and content creators would tell people that they needed to keep the software running, providing storage and bandwidth in order to serve and thereby share the videos and support the creators of the content they watch. When you do that, you are an ipfs node, and you are powering the network.

@AMDmi3 also a nice thing about ipfs iroh is that the persistance part for getters and providers is unimportant, as long as there are enough persistant connected service noces and enough providers at a given moment to satisfy demand for a given blob, the network is healthy.

@AMDmi3 a major advantage over peertube is that users could provide content while not being on the site and that the instance owner does not have to foot the bill for the storage and band width. A disadvantage would be the likely death of old unpopular content that users dont see value in storing. But thats also a problem for any platform that is not as wealthy as YouTube.
