Pinned toot

I've been playing with the coconut programming language, which is python language extension. I've put down some thoughts:

Ah, first dark pattern discovered. Default search engine is Bing (fine). But when you change it to something else, it actually keeps the search on the new tab page as Bing. And it focuses the search bar when you open a new tab. So you still use Bing even though you don’t want to.

Hi fosstodon, I made a video series diving into the network stack and what is involved in loading a web page:
I'm keen for feedback! 🙂

As someone who is way too dependent on his proprietary #iPhone, I am really excited by all the work going on at @Pine64! Check out this video on @frontpagelinux about the #PinePhone by @MichaelTunnell

Plasma 5.20, by all accounts a massive release, is here. Plasma 5.20 comes with tons of new features and improvements which will make your Plasma desktop experience easier, smoother and more fun.

I want to talk about algorithms on social media. Specifically about how mastodon and the Fediverse often write on their presentation page or feature list about how they "don't have algorithms" because they display posts in chronological order.

Give someone a program, you frustrate them for a day; teach them how to program, you frustrate them for a lifetime. -- David Leinweber

This just seems like terrible design. Who approved a floating bar that covers the main content of the page?

Can we please, please – PLEASE! not make the nonsensical US date format month/day/year the default in applications? 🤦‍♂️

And to all users of that format: it makes no sense, it's counter-intuitive, it makes collaboration frustrating, it introduces inconsistencies and errors... Just stop. Please. Use international standards.
(And don't get me started on your other units of weights, volumes and distances. Bloody hell.)

Boost if I'm right.

Could you guys recommend me some blogs for my RSS feed reader? I'm interested in gaming, free software and cartoons. Those who are a part of 100 days to offload challange can advertise their own blogs too :)

Happy 25th birthday to Windows 95!

It's not Linux or FOSS of any kind, but its design metaphors heavily influenced nearly every desktop interface to come after.

It (or one of its later W9x descendants) were also the first OS for a large number of people, including the person writing this toot 😊.

Sweet, this is the first time my cron job script has naturally worked where I didn't need to troubleshoot and then manually run to test it. 😀

@kev @cooper @mike I'm looking into an RSS reader to move to after I discovered feedly won't let me follow RSS feeds from reddit without buying a paid membership.
What I'm looking for is:
* FOSS/FOSS supporting
* Happy paid hosted service, as long as my money is going to improve FOSS

The only one I've found so far is NewsBlur. Do you have any alternatives, or have you used NewsBlur?

@itguyeric I just listened to your episode on the Linux Spotlight podcast, and thought it was a great chat. Very good insight from you, also, on burnout etc.

Day 75 of the Series.

So I hear TikTok is a thing. If people want that kind of platform, they need to rethink how it's being done. Open and Federated is better.
