Me: "Ok time to build a CHEAP PC for video editing and light gaming."
Also me: "Let's start with an AMD Ryzen 9 3950X CPU."
Putting together a 1500 euro build, meanwhile these are my monitors 😂
It's a slippery slope! Hahaha!
@Gina that's not light:). Save yourself a lot of money and get a 2nd generation 2700x, more than powerful enough, and you can use the money you save for a better vid card and more ram.
@LPS That's the thing, when it comes to CPU I don't really have a feel for what is necessary for a bit of editing and gaming. Would the 2700x really compare well with for example the 3900x?
I'd rather pay a bit more to do it right immediately than having to invest more later to upgrade.
@Gina I had the same dilemma, I use a 2700 for editing/gaming daily using a MB that is second generation but supports 3rd with a bios update. This way if ever I'd like to upgrade to a new CPU you can. Most editors take advantage of graphics cards now anyway. I use a GTX1660 which is powerful and affordable.
@Gina IMHO never buy bleeding edge, you get soaked. Most specs look significant on paper but aren't noticeable in everyday usage.
@LPS Since I won't use Da Vinci Resolve and since I'm a very light gamer (think Rollercoaster Tycoon lol), it's probably wiser to invest in a good cpu and just buy a cheap video card for now.
Both are way overkill for even the most demanding games (CPU-wise).
The 12 (real) cores of the 3900X is likely enough for your video editing needs. Gives you some extra money for a monitor ;)
I would recommend the 3900X, especially when you plan to do 4k video stuff.
Price difference between 3950 and 3900 is huge, while 'even' cheaper has less effect on price, but does on performance.
The difference between the 3700 and 3900 is in several benchmarks 30% and that's a LOT.
In any case, the 3XX0 CPUs are Zen2 architecture on 7nm, while 2XX0 are Zen1 on 14nm (I think).
That is significant, including in power usage.
I'm building a setup around the 3900x right now on pcpartpicker. Another difficult choice is the motherboard. Again, huge price differences. I'm looking at the Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming ATX AM4 Motherboard atm. Looks alright, but not 100% sure if that's the best choice.
Not familiar with pcpartpicker myself; I usually look on tweakers.net.
That board has favorable reviews on https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/1420816/asus-rog-strix-x570-e-gaming/reviews/ and also includes a link to https://nl.hardware.info/artikel/9411/25-amd-x570-moederborden-review-op-de-proef-met-een-3900x
All my MBs are Asus, but in the end it remains some kind of gamble.
Do check the Memory Compatibility (Memory QVL) document on Asus' MB product website for suitable RAM (model/speed/configurations). Hopefully it's not as finicky as with my 1st Gen/1st Stepping Ryzen CPU, but better safe then sorry.
The reviews on tweakers help me to narrow down possible candidates, but you'll 'never' get to a point where there is only 1 valid candidate. That's what I meant with 'gamble' as at some point you just have to choose one and that'll work out great ... or not (which could just be bad DOA board instance; shit happens).
@FreePietje @LPS Nnnngghh choosing is hard. Think I'm gonna go for the Asus. https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/compare/1420816;1400058/
Hahaha! Well at least that is better than a vt220. Scroll bars will be your new frienemy
@Gina It's the only way to play old games!
@Gina I'm considering with the 3900 or the 3950, but not certain about the video card. Nvidia & I have a bad history, but AMD's offerings are quite as good for stuff like video rendering.
@Gina err, that should have said"... aren't as good....".
@Gina a friend talked me into this route when my old system became unreliable, which impacted my job and earnings
a 3900X was a lot less expensive and still 12 cores
Also got a decent amount of ram and an m2 drive, rendering in kdenlive is a lot faster than uploading to my Nextcloud instance
it wasn't cheap, but it was inexspensive ( doesn't mean it's financially justifiable )
@FLOX_advocate Yeah looking at price alone it's definitely going to be a 3900x instead of 3950x, if not an even cheaper model.
Can't wait to see the finished setup ;)
@Gina it's the gentleman's choice
@nvsr the ladies' choice actually.
I persobaly ise a amd ryzen 1600 which dose fine on qith vidoediting, but what exatly you keed will come down to what eiditing softwere you use and what codex yoy record in.
