Day 2 of PublicSpaces conference has started! Follow the livestream at https://conference.publicspaces.net - we have started with the launch of #pubhubs - an alternative for social media platforms https://pubhubs.net
For almost five years, we have been doing the exercise of replacing stock OS on phones. We can tell first hand how oftentimes unnecessarily difficult/impossible it is. In the interest of reducing the insane amount of e-waste and truly being in control of our devices, we need laws that allow us to install any software on any device!
Thanks to @fsfe for writing a nice open letter about just that, we happily signed it:

It's time for another service pack. It's a small one and in fact the last one for v21.12 - meaning next month around this time we'll have v22.06 out!
Dear #Linux distribution makers: take all the energy you spend creating #GNOME themes and invest them in improving your overall experience, contributing upstream, and creating a nice dynamic wallpaper instead.
You’re not going to improve on stock GNOME 42.
This is not what I would have said in the past but I’m hugely impressed by the latest version and, more importantly, the direction they’re going. And sad to see the wasted effort that slows down releases and ties up vital development effort.
Nieuwe aflevering van Dasprive Discours over het Vlaams Datanutsbedrijf.

#ChatControl is some serious crazy stuff where #EU citizens can only scratch their head and think "How could they come up with this?"
Not only that, but this #surveillance nightmare is brought on the table over and over again. It is against #European values and rights to #Privacy. It erodes #trust with people that #EuropeanCommission is working in the collective best interest.
What's next? Camera's in our home, so we can all feel safe knowing big brother is watching over us?
EU Commissioner claims citizens support draft #ChatControl legislation to oblige e-mail, messaging and chat providers to search all private messages for allegedly illegal material and report to the police.
The proposal she presented proves the opposite is the case.
Very interesting research: https://homes.esat.kuleuven.be/~asenol/leaky-forms/
"Users' email addresses are exfiltrated to tracking, marketing and analytics domains before form submission and before giving consent"
-> yes, you read that right, before form submission.
This is an example of how the intransparency of the digital world leads to a huge #InformationAsymmetry between normal people and corporations.

the Facebook Papers
We're Publishing the Facebook Papers. Here's What They Say About the Ranking Algorithms That Control Your News Feed.
#Facebook employees knew that a computer-curated feed increased the time users spent on the social network—and that it led to unhealthy behaviors.

One more week until #PintOfScience! For those who haven't heard of it, POS is the largest #SciComm festival in the world. Over the course of three evenings, thousands of researchers in over 400 cities in 24 countries talk about their work in an accessible manner in an informal (often pub) setting. I'm not involved with #pint22 but hope to get back to volunteering for future versions. Check out if there are events near you on https://pintofscience.com/ and consider treating yourself to a night out!
