if you are on #alpinelinux edge, you can now `apk add apk-tools3@testing` to install apk3 as system-wide apk (or just `apk add apk-tools3` if you don't mask the testing repo)

we (speaking with apk-tools maintainer hat on) do not recommend upgrading the apkdb to v3 at this time as other system utilities which depend on libapk2 will not be able to use the v3 apkdb

@ariadne Do you know when apk-tools v3.0 will be released? It seems like it's been inching toward this slowly...

@Conan_Kudo @ariadne afaik its planned for Alpine 3.22 (which gets released in may)

@fossdd @ariadne As the maintainer of apk-tools in Fedora, I'm trying to figure out if I can get away without having apk-tools v2 in Fedora 42, which requires me to upgrade apk-tools sometime between now and the beginning of April.

@Conan_Kudo @fossdd i believe we will be able to deliver apk-tools 3.0.0 before april. the go or no-go decision for apk3 in alpine 3.22 is before that.

@Conan_Kudo @fossdd in fact, we will know in just a few weeks at the latest if the decision gets postponed again. but I think we are on track this time.

@Conan_Kudo @fossdd but to me personally: shipping is *essential* at this point. it is the only feature that matters. we are now 5 years into developing apk3, and i'll be damned if i'm going to let it slip into second system hell like RPM5 did.

@ariadne @fossdd Oh god, please don't remind me. That was a mess for *everyone*. 😰

@ariadne @fossdd Okay, coming back to this thread. Fedora's final freeze is April 1, and I'd really like to have apk-tools v3.0 in F42 before then. How are things looking on that front?
