PrivacyToolsIO failing to their principles: dark patterns and the hidden contract with NordVPN:
If you want features added or fixed on the Fediverse, the best thing is to get in touch with the people who make the server type you're on. Most Fediverse server types have an official site which includes instructions on how to let them know about bugs, request features, contribute translations etc.
Here are some official Fediverse sites' contribution guides. Most welcome contributions from all kinds of people, including non-techies:
The Fediverse is made collaboratively by volunteers, which means it's easy to directly communicate with the people who make it. This is a huge advantage over bigger networks, it makes it easier to stay human and humane.
PSA: As of 2021-06-22 17:30+00:00, Brave Search (https://search.brave.com/) claims that its engine uses an independent index, and that client-side search engine fallback to Google is opt-in. My experience is that server-side search result fallback to Google is the default.
Here are some examples, archived via the Wayback Machine:
If this is a bug, it’s very serious and needs to be publicly disclosed. It undermines their whole selling point of being powered by an “independent index”. Way too many searches return results identical to Google, Startpage, and Searx instances with only Google enabled. No other independent engine of all the 25 other English independently-indexing engines I compared has had this happen; identical pages on all the other engines are nearly impossible to find for advanced/uncommon queries. Returning identical results so often when the other 25 non-Google-Bing-Yandex engines almost never do is way too much of a coincidence.
